The Drift Is Ours
May 4th, 2010 – Aug. 16th, 2010

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, in Madrid , is organizing an exhibition entitled The Drift Is Ours, scheduled to be held from 4th May to 16th August 2010.

Curated by Lisette Lagnado, this research project is based on the premise of a modernity grounded in the vernacular in order to seek an alternative to the two elements that have traditionally dominated this discourse: the presence of Le Corbusier and an European Situationist perspective that originated with the two World Wars. The idea for the exhibition consists in investigating certain proposals for a city of the future in Latin American cities which have been excluded from the official narrative. The show focuses on people whose actions were decisive for the local environment, such as Roberto Matta, Lina Bo Bardi and Flávio de Carvalho, and several initiatives that remained on the utopian – one might even say the romantic – plane, emphasising the ambiguity of the term “visionary” which can indicate an extemporaneous nature but can also describe a failure to conform to a specific programme.

The intention is to underline the legacy of Matta in the sample, as a student of Le Corbusier and the forerunner of other artists.
